CHAPTER 8

Margo had hardly slept; her eyes were puffy and red from crying. Mrs. Morris knocked lightly on her bedroom before letting herself in and opening the curtains letting the winter sun flood the room.

"Morning, sweetie," Mrs. Morris' voice was somber; she didn't like the situation any more than Margo and Chase did.

"Morning, Mrs. Morris," Margo yawned, rubbing her face, trying to hide her tear-stained cheeks.

"Margo, come on, call me Sam," Sam sat on the end of Margo's bed, her face filled with regret.

"What is it, Samantha?"

"The wedding is planned for three o'clock, in the barn. He has set aside your mother's dress for you too."

That was the final straw. Margo stormed out of bed and down the hall to her father's room. He wasn't there, so she headed to his office. Chase was heading inside from the morning chores when Margo flew down the stairs in her pink and white spotted P.J. shorts and camisole that hugged her curves and showed off her long legs. Her thick black hair was still messy from tossing and turning all night long, but it framed her face beautifully.

"Margo?" Chase asked.

She glanced at him before storming into her father's office. She pushed the door so hard that it slammed against the wall.

"You may be forcing me into this marriage, but don't you dare for a second think that I will be wearing Mom's dress or getting married in the barn. She would be ashamed of you! If I am doing this, it's on my terms, and we will get married at city hall!" Margo roared.

"Margo…." Robert began, but Margo was too angry to listen.

"Those are my terms! Deal with it!" she snapped back before storming out and back upstairs.

Chase watched her storm off, he had never seen her so angry, but he knew it was more than that. She was hurting, and it pained him to see. It wasn't just Robert forcing her into this. Chase felt guilty for putting his concerns on her the night before. If he hadn't mentioned everyone else relying on the ranch, she might have decided against the marriage altogether. Shame flooded him as he followed her upstairs.

"Margo? Are you okay?" Chase asked, knocking gently on her door.

Margo paced angrily around the room. When she turned to look at him, he saw the pain in her eyes. He didn't want to be a reason for that pain.

"Am I okay? Nothing about this is okay! He thinks he is giving me something when he is taking something far more precious…." Margo stopped abruptly.

"Look, ignore what I said last night. The others and I will deal with whatever happens. If you don't want to do this, you don't have to."

"How can I ignore it when everything you said is true? It's not just you or me we have to consider here."

"Margo."

"No, Chase! It's done! I've made the call. The wedding is set for four-thirty this afternoon at city hall. I don't want to see anyone until then," she slammed the door in his face.
